Happenings in Second

This pass week we worked on Butterflies in Science. We read a non-fiction story about butterflies. Then the students created an informational brochure on important facts about butterflies. Finally, the kids needed to work on their STEM project. The were given tissues paper (shaped like a butterfly), a balloon, glue, and a piece of cardboard. They needed to figure out how to make the wings on the butterfly moves as if they were flying. We had two different versions. One team held a balloon under the butterfly and release the air which made the "wings" move. The other used static electricity by rubbing the balloon onto their hair and then placing it over the wings which made them move. I have attached pictures so that you can see the need for communication, compromise, and ultimately success! We will be cooking on Monday... making a stage of the butterfly life cycle.... a cocoon.

Math- the kids have been very successful with their fractions and we will be moving on to multiplication this upcoming week.

Reading- The students have been working hard on their comprehension and answering question by extending their answers. We have been completing a written project "How to Survive Second Grade." They are looking forward to giving it to their First Grade Buddies when they visit towards the end of the school year.

A last note...For those who had the opportunity to be involved or go and watch the Variety Show on Friday, I hope you had as much fun as I did. What a great group of students! What TALENT!
